Astrobiology combines knowledge and techniques from various scientific disciplines, including:
BIOLOGY
Biology provides the knowledge and framework for understanding what life is, how it functions, where it might exist, and how we can detect it beyond Earth. While astrobiology is a multidisciplinary field that draws heavily on astronomy, geology, chemistry and physics, the study of biology provides the crucial context for the phenomenon we are ultimately seeking to understand and potentially find elsewhere in the universe.
CHEMISTRY
Chemistry forms a critical link between the physical sciences like astronomy and geology, and biology. It allows astrobiologists to understand the elemental composition and molecular structure of life as we know it: carbon-based, requiring water, and built from organic molecules like amino acids, nucleic acids, lipids, and carbohydrates. This provides a foundation for considering what other forms life might take, even if based on different chemistry.
PHYSICS
Physics provides the framework for understanding the universe as a physical system and the forces that govern it: gravity, electromagnetism, and nuclear forces (radiation). The field is fundamental to the development of spacecraft propulsion systems and instruments needed to search for life beyond Earth. In coordination with biology and chemistry, physics is essential for understanding the effects of microgravity, radiation, and other aspects of the space environment on biological systems.
GEOLOGY
Geology provides the only direct record of Earth’s earliest environments: the atmosphere, oceans, and landmasses. By studying ancient rocks and minerals, astrobiologists can better understand the conditions in which life first came about. Studying these features on Earth could help identify similar locations or conditions on other planet which may also produce life.
PLANETARY SCIENCE
Planetary science is important because it helps us understand the origins and evolution of our solar system, including the Earth, and the potential for life beyond Earth. Studying other planets and celestial bodies helps us understand Earth's past, present, and potential future, including environmental phenomenon like climate change and space weather. Planetary science provides insights into the processes that shaped our planet and the conditions necessary for life to exist.
